Kenneth L. Lichstein, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair, Department of Psychology, The University of Alabama. He is formerly Dunavant Professor of Psychology and Director of the Behavioral Medicine Program, University of Memphis. He has also previously served as Director of Clinical Training. Professor Lichstein traveled to his current interests in behavioral medicine and sleep research by a circuitous route. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a major in accounting from the City College of New York, taught elementary school for four years in New York City, and then returned to school to do his doctoral work at the University of Tennessee with a child clinical major. Early in his career his interests shifted to adult behavioral medicine, and he conducted programmatic research in insomnia, headaches, anxiety disorders, relaxation processes, and clinical psychophysiology. For the past 20 years, his research has focused almost exclusively on sleep disorders with an emphasis on insomnia in older adults. His research has always been distributed between basic applied research and clinical trials. Professor Lichstein's research has been supported continuously since 1988 by a series of grants from the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Methodist Healthcare Foundation, the H. W. Durham Foundation, and industry. Since 1990, he has supervised a Behavioral Sleep Medicine clinic at sleep disorders centers in Memphis and Tuscaloosa that serve the dual purpose as a practicum site for training graduate students and a fertile research collaboration. Professor Lichstein has served on the editorial board of a number of journals including the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Behavior Therapy, and Sleep. He is the founding editor of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. He has published over 100 journal articles, 25 book chapters, and four books. Contact information: Kenneth L.
